Interviewed by: Caroline Hill“Rap is a way for me to show my creative expression and to show my life to the world. It’s a way to let my colors to shine bright for others to see and to distinguish myself from everyone else around me. My music reflects who I am as a person… although rap allows me to creatively express myself, I also want to write music because I want to help other people. I want to have a positive impact on other people by letting my life reflect their lives. By letting my story touch other people’s hearts, I hope to bring light and hope for those who are experiencing tough obstacles in life. The best thing to do when you’re struggling is talk about it with other people, and rap is my way of helping others by bringing happiness in their lives. Not many people know that; that’s why I rap.” If you had to talk to a stranger, how would you describe the community of highland park to them? I would describe the community of Highland Park to them as very gifted and very talented group of people. Everyone is very smart and everybody has their own diverse group of interests, which is what I really like about the place. What was your first impression of Highland Park? There’s a lot of smart people. We live in a privileged area and so the kids seem to be pretty destined to do great things. What are some things you love about this community? I like how this community puts a challenge on me. For example my teachers have taught me how to challenge myself and to push myself harder to be a smarter person and to achieve my goals. Some of my friends have supported me to, well, like in my music career. Even, when I think I couldn't do it. What are you involved in at the school? At the school. I was involved in the orchestra, you probably knew that before. I was involved in the symphony orchestra at Highland Park High School in freshman and sophomore year, then sophomore and junior year I was apart of this club called the Statistic Club where you compete in the stock market race with a bunch of other groups in the club as well. Junior year, I was also apart of this group called the Highland Park Science Team where you go to meets and take tests to see if you score high. I’m also apart of the Asian Student Association where you are apart of and you go to volunteer at events and get service hours and stuff like that. What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? Most people don’t really know how much music actually means to me. So for me, I think when I started writing music in the eighth grade, I immediately knew this was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. This was something that was going to stick with me for a while and that its something I would never give up on. People don’t believe that I can do it, I do receive criticism from some people and it happens, It’s life. You just have to deal with it. But despite what people say, I still continue on. In ninth grade, i’m really lucky to have really supportive parents who bought me my first microphone, bought me my first mixer, bought me all these things. Software programs that I can use to make songs, make rap come to life, make my expression come to life. And, like I just continue on. And I know there's a lot of people in this world who may not think I’m the best rapper or that I may not even be a rapper at all, but I consider myself a rapper because it’s what I really like doing and in my opinion, that's all that matters in life. In the middle of my junior year, I released my very first ten track album and ever since it happened, you can find it basically anywhere, on spotify, soundcloud, itunes, google play, amazon. Ever since that happened it has given me the motivation to push forward. I was in my own little world like I was like okay, this is my life, and this is what i want to do. And it’s my unique side. Rap is a way for me to show my creative expression and show my life and let my colors to shine bright to to see and for me to distinguish myself myself from the world . It's like okay, this is me and I want to write music because I want to help other people. I want to have a positive impact on other people by letting my life reflect theirs. By letting my story like touch other people's hearts to see if it can help other people and bring on hope to those who are like depressed or something like that. Because, you know, depression is something that we can’t really ignore in our society. Like we try to hide it from everyone, we try to pretend that it doesn't exist but we have to talk about it because it's definitely real in this world. And definitely like a lot of people face it in this world. The best thing to do is talk about it, and like my rap is creative expression. To try to help others like bring upon happiness in other people's lives. And because of that, thats why i really like doing, and not many people do know why i actually rap, and that's why i actually rap So you mentioned it helps you with depression, does your rap- like is it uplifting? Or how does it help people with depression? I mean, in my rap, I tell people about my stories so other people to relate. So like everything I state in my album is 100 percent true. It's like a reflection of my reality. I remember I was a kid and I listened to my favorite artist, they told about their stories. They told like whenever I was sad. And I just listen to those words. I just felt like they were talking to me and I was like oh my god, I’m not really alone in this world. Isolation comes from depression and I was isolated and to know that these artists have such a huge impact on like my own life, even though they don't even know me. Like, I want to try to do the same for other people. And that's what really inspired me.
