Interviewed by Richard Luo“In middle school, [I wish I could have] focused more on extracurriculars and gotten really good at that, so by the time I got to high school, I would actually be good at something other than school. For example, the violin. I didn't really practice that much in middle school, to be honest. I probably should have practiced a lot more, and when I got to high school where I started getting busy, now it's a lot harder to find time to practice. It’s really important to know how to budget your time.I sometimes spend way too much time studying for something that's really easy, and then I realize I haven't studied at all for my biology test the next day. That was not good. So you have to figure out what you're good at, what you need to study, and how much time you need to dedicate for each. Overall, I like high school a lot more than middle school. Middle school wasn't bad in terms of classes, but it just felt like there wasn’t anything to do. In high school, there’s so much more stuff, and it organizes a lot more social events. There’s a lot more people you can meet, and most importantly I feel like there's a purpose in high school. Middle school kids can do whatever they want and it doesn't really matter in the end. But in high school, I feel like you have a purpose, you have a goal, and you know you're doing something.”

Interviewed by Phoebe Nguyen“At first, you think high school is going to be the same as middle school ... but it’s a lot harder and teachers also have higher expectations because they deal with upperclassmen students. So, you just need to push yourself a lot harder freshmen year. [My experience in high school has] made me a lot more realistic. I know that I can only do so much, only what I strive to do, only what I push myself to do and unless I work hard I won’t be able to do anything else. I [also] learned that communication is necessary to achieve anything because you need to work with your teachers and communicate with them, so they know your best interests. You need to communicate with other students to see what your problems are, and what you need to work on to do better in classes”
Interviewed by Maaya Shah“I think coming into high school, I didn’t really know exactly what I wanted. In general, I just wanted to do well but also enjoy myself. Taking certain classes has made me realize my interest in certain topics. For example, taking physics is actually really cool to me and I think I want to do [it in the future], but I would not have thought about it much as a freshman, now that [I have] learned what physics is about. I think something else I learned from high school is how to manage my time and prioritize. You can't do everything, so you have to pick something to do over other things. [If I could go back in time], I would tell myself to sleep more and stress less.”
Interviewed by: Lela Miller“If you really work at something every day, you can get pretty good at it. [Participating in school plays is] something fun to do. I can get to know a lot of people, and I’ve met a lot of great people in choir. I think I can know some of those people even better in the plays, and I can meet new theater people.”
Interviewed by Hope Jin“I would say don’t put too much emphasis on you grades. I’ve had grades bring me down in the past, [which made me] have very low self esteem. So just like not taking the numbers so seriously and know that it will all balance out in the end. Also, make sure that you take a class that you really enjoy and are actually interested in. I’m taking Medical Microbiology this year and it’s a class that I really find interesting, and I think that it made want to study and pursue biology in the future.”
Interviewed by: Christina Healy“Take it slow and try not to get overwhelmed with work because that’s what I did my first [two] years of high school, and it didn’t turn out so well. I think that the most important lesson I’ve learned in high school is to make sure that I don’t focus on what I need to do but on getting it done because especially in the pre-AP and the AP TAG classes, teachers tend to overwhelm you. They like to give you a bunch of work to do outside of school, which makes sense because it helps you learn, but at the same time it can be really stressful. I came into high school with my teachers telling me that ‘high school’s going to be tough and that no one’s really going to give you slack if you do anything wrong’ so I was really intimidated and felt like I wouldn’t be able to get through high school with good grades, but as I went through high school I’ve been able to believe in myself more.
In middle school, I was really quiet and I didn’t really talk to many people. In high school, I’ve learned to become more open, to make new friends and to not be scared to talk to people. I’ve become more confident and open, but at the same time I am still kind of stressed and am still trying to work on that, and hopefully I’ll be able to improve before I get to college.” |
